A Visit to Smithsonian’s Nature’s Best Photography Exhibition

Monday, April 16th, 2012

John and I celebrated our ninth anniversary Saturday.  There’s an exhibit I’ve been wanting to see at the Museum of Natural History, so John and I drove downtown, got coffee, and strolled hand-in-hand over to the National Mall.  We enjoyed the exhibit we set out to see, but equally enjoyed an exhibit I didn’t know about prior to our visit, the 2011 Windland Smith Rice International Award Winners for Nature’s Best Photography.

If you live anywhere near DC, I highly recommend a visit to this exhibit.  The photographs were visually stunning, of course.  But in addition, photographers talk a lot about “telling a story” with an image, and these masters had managed to tell heart-warming, mesmerizing stories with their winning photographs.

As a photographer, the thing that most surprised me was the *daring* of these nature photographers!!  I read the data on every single picture, of course, and while some were taken with enormous zooms, plenty were taken with a 70-200.  Most shocking of all, a winning photograph of a fly perched atop a snakes head was taken with a 100mm 2.8 lens.  This is not a zoom lens at all, and in order for the photographer to have captured the image, he literally must have been within a foot of the action.  I think I’ll stick with weddings and portraits. :-)

If you can’t make it down, you can check out the galleries here.  The winning pictures are all shown along with the photographer’s narrative of capturing the image and camera settings.

Interested in learning more?| Columbia, Maryland Photographers

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

In any industry, it’s important to keep up with what’s going on, learn more, and be inspired.  In the wedding and portrait photography industry now, there are so many great ways to do this.  Of course, most of them aren’t free, and require you to get out of your home, but not all of them. :)

When I found out about Creative Live, I thought it was too good to be true.  They bring some of the top instructors in for a 3 day live workshop, and you can watch it all from your computer at home.

The next one actually starts tomorrow, and it’s all about posing.  If you want to learn more, click on the photo below to go to the site and enroll.

 Happy Thursday!

Recommendation: Plate to Pixel: Maryland Photographers

Monday, February 27th, 2012

You remember the post I did last Friday about the food?  Yeah, well, I have to admit, I had a little help getting those great shots.  Becky is so great at finding awesome photography books, and she told me about one she got a few weeks ago called Plate to Pixel, by Helene Dujardin.   When I knew I was going to be photographing the food for Carriage House, I borrowed the book and, honestly, was just blown away by it.  I pretty much sat down and read the whole thing from cover to cover in one sitting.  Besides having just stunning photos, the writing is great and she really explains things so well.  Helene is so great at getting these food shots  and you can tell she has a passion and love for food photography.  If you’re looking for a book to change the way you think about food photography, this is the one!   If you want food shots you post on your blog to be taken to the next level, go out and buy this book – really. :)  [and no, I'm not paid to say this. haha.]

One of the neatest sections for me was the section on styling.  It’s amazing how something relevant added to the photo will make your plate of food so appealing!  Check out her blog and look at the photos.  She’s really incredible at putting a photo together to make you want to eat the food – and isn’t that the ultimate goal of food photography?

I admit – I’m a little star-struck.  I’m also so excited to be able to implement so much of her book, not only in the food we photograph, but also in all the details shots we get at weddings and during portrait shoots.  So many of these techniques can really be applied to more than just food photography, and I can’t wait to get started!

Interview with Rex & Regina Wedding Planner | Maryland Photographers

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

A few weeks ago, we met up with Teresa of Rex and Regina Wedding & Event Planning.  We were immediately struck by her warm and helpful personality.  We love learning from other Wedding Professionals, and we were so grateful that Teresa took the time to meet up with us, answered our questions, and give us some very helpful business advice!  We loved talking to her so much we decided we just had to interview her and feature her on our blog.  Also, you may remember our interview with Brian, of Stone Manor, well, she’s on the Preferred Vendor List there, too, so we’re not the only one who thinks she’s awesome. :)

Teresa, her husband, Brian, and their dog, Fletcher

1. What got you into Wedding and Event Planning??

I have always had a heart for hospitality. This certainly played out with personal entertaining over the years, but I also found that, regardless of the professional job that I had, I always gravitated to the event planning elements of the position. So personally and professionally my comfort zone and skill set always fell within event planning. When I realized that I could turn my passion to plan into a full-time pursuit, I knew I had to give it a shot. I did, and I’ve never looked back!

2. What is your favorite part of the wedding planning process??

I love working with my clients. They are each diverse and have a unique vision for their wedding. I love working behind the scenes to help them bring that vision to life in a way that reflects their style and taste.

3. What are 5 words you would use to describe yourself and your company?

Gracious
Detail-oriented
Organized
Tasteful
Polished

4. What are three questions a bride should ask a wedding planner she’s hoping to work with??

What is your experience in planning?
Why do you do what you do?
What’s the worst thing you’ve had to troubleshoot at a wedding and what did you do to resolve it?

5. Is there any situation where you would advise a bride not to hire a wedding planner??

If her budget is very low it is often unreasonable to hire a planner. I’d suggest investing that money in food, beverage, and venue instead and turning to a friend to handle some of the day-of logistics. It won’t be the same as a planner, but you always need a point person handling things that day.

6. What is a random, interesting fact about you?

I was on the cover of the Boston Globe on Christmas day when I was two years old. It was unplanned. My mother and I were at a Christmas décor shop and a Globe photographer spotted me looking up at the lights on a tree. It was my fifteen minutes of fame!

7. Has there been any job or award that you were particularly proud of?

Rex & Regina Events was recently listed as a Washingtonian magazine preferred wedding planner. We are so proud of that acknowledgement and of the great company we are in.

8. Fill in the blank: I just love working with a bride that…

…doesn’t feel tied to having her wedding look like a traditional wedding with all the standard elements we’ve come to expect at weddings. Weddings should be personal and reflective of the couple, and while certain traditions are important and relevant, it is a shame to follow a tradition just because everyone else does.

9. Where do you go for inspiration?

With technologies like blogs and Pinterest, it is easy to find visual inspiration online. But I also like drawing from other sources, like trends I see emerging at restaurants and in the interior design field, for example.

10. Any tips of the trade that you can share with us everyday hostesses when we plan our own events?

Be organized, organized, organized. For my last party at hosted at my home, I created a planning document that ended up being five pages long. It contained my menu, shopping list by menu item, and a timeline of what to cook, set out, and prepare when. You never want to be caught just before the party saying, “I don’t have a serving dish for that” or, “Whoops, I don’t have time to make the gravy.”

11.  Any other vendors you love to work with and want to give a shout-out to here on our blog?

One of the things about the event planning industry in the DC-area is the breadth of talent we have. From photographers to florists to event planners – there are so many fabulously talented vendors it would be hard to pick just one!

Another New Years Resolution: Eating Healthy | Maryland Photographers

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

One of my husband and my goals for this year is to create a healthy eating lifestyle.  My husband also wants to lose a bit of weight in the process, and I want to be able to help him and start eating  better myself.  I admit, I’m not a cook.  No, really.  When I do cook Akie finds it necessary to go check that all the stove burners are turned off, because they have been left on for quite a while on more than one occasion.  He even made me a sign to put up that says “Turn the Stove Off”.  It’s pretty bad. :(

A few weeks ago, though, I stumbled across a book by Pam Anderson: The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight & Eating Great, and while flipping through it thought it looked pretty cool, so I went ahead and bought it. [Desperation, perhaps? :)]   I have since fallen in love with this book and the recipes are just so tasty!

Pam Anderson The Perfect Recipe book

This book isn’t another diet book, but it’s a book with tasty, healthy recipes, and a guide to great cooking.  She even has a list of what all she keeps on her pantry shelves so she can good great anytime.  This is amazing for me, because it’s a pre-made shopping list right in front of me! yay.  The recipes all have the calories listed as well, which is helpful when I’m cooking for Akie.

I’ve tried a few recipes from this book [and I forgot to take pictures...but they were tasty!] and can’t wait to try out more.  Here’s a picture of the granola I’ve made, and I’m now eating breakfast instead of just drinking a cup of coffee.  yay me! :)

Pam Anderson Perfect Recipe

If you like tasty recipes, go buy any of Pam Anderson‘s cookbooks, and you’ll be sure to love the dishes. In fact, Becky has one of her cookbooks, and made our delicious Christmas Dinner from there.  Yes, it was that good. :)
